SynTao is a consulting company that focuses on promoting corporate social responsibility (CSR) and socially responsible investment (SRI) in China. SynTao is Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP)’s local facilitator in mainland China and has been writing the CDP China Reports from 2008 to 2010.
CDP is an independent not-for-profit organization holding the largest database of primary corporate climate change information in the world. The mission of CDP is to accelerate solutions to climate change by putting relevant information at the center of business and investment decisions. Investor CDP furthers that mission by requesting information on the risks and opportunities of climate from the world’s largest companies on behalf of 551 institutional investor signatories with a combined $71 trillion in assets under management. CDP then provides this information to its 551 institutional investor signatories, as well as distributing it throughout the global market place to increase transparency around climate-related investment risk and commercial opportunity, and drive investments towards a low carbon economy.
This year, on behalf of 551 signatories with US$71 trillion in assets, CDP sent its information request to more than 4,800 large companies globally to collects climate change and carbon emissions data. The top 100 Chinese companies by share value is included in the 2011 sample.
In 2010, 13 companies answered the questionnaire, and 26 provided information. In addition, Guosen Securities answered the questionnaire and disclosed its carbon information on voluntary basis. CDP 2010 achieved a record response rate and significant improvement in the quality of answers from participating Chinese companies.
In 2009, SynTao continued to send disclosure requests to the top 100 list Chinese companies by market capitalization among whom 11 answered the questionnaire, and 18 provided relevant information. This marks the highest ever response rate of Chinese companies to CDP, with significant improvement in the quality of information provided in the questionnaire. More remarkable is that the number of companies that answered the questionnaire doubled since last year.
In 2008, CDP worked with SynTao for the first survey on Chinese companies, covering top 100 Chinese public companies by market capitalization. Among the 100 companies, 5 filled out the questionnaire, 20 provided relevant information. China Investment Corporation (CIC) and China Industrial Bank participated in CDP 2008 as signatories investors.
